Product Safety News: SodaStream Recalls 58,600 Explosive Bottles
SodaStream, the Israeli based beverage and carbonation company, has issued the recall of around 51,000 plastic bottles sold in the United States over concerns that they might explode. SodaStream told U.S. authorities that the blue tinted one-liter bottles with a blue cap and blue base “can burst under pressure” because of a manufacturing defect. Around 7,600 bottles were also sold in Canada.
At the time of the recall SodaStream told the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) that they had not received any reports of injury connected to the bottles in question. But on the CPSC’s website there are a number of complaints about exploding SodaStream bottles that date back to 2012. Although the bottles are from different models and are not included in the recall, the alleged complaints are all similar. When the consumer is carbonating water the top or the bottom of the plastic bottle can allegedly blow off. Other claimed incidents of a SodaStream bottle bursting can be found on Facebook and Reddit. SodaStream has not responded to each event and this is their only U.S. recall over exploding bottles during that five-year period.
Defective SodaStream Bottles Imported to America
The defective bottles were manufactured in Israel and imported by SodaStream USA Inc., located in Mount Laurel, NJ. The potentially dangerous bottles were distributed nationwide from February 2016 until January 2017 for around $15 and have the expiration “4/2020” printed on the warning label. The dishwasher-safe bottles were purchased online at Amazon.com and SodaStream.com, as well as at retailers like Bed Bath & Beyond, Walmart, and Target – the latter is currently in the middle of several other recent recalls including defective strollers, scooters, and benches over potential fall hazards.
The CPSC has told consumers who own a recalled carbonating bottle to stop using them immediately. Owners of a home carbonation system are also being warned to carefully follow the instructions unique to each machine. SodaStream has told their affected customers to contact them for a refund.
